چکیده
Gerald Reaven, M.D., is Professor Emeritus (Active) of Medicine at Stanford University. He has served as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Division of Gerontology, and the combined Divisions of Endocrinology-Metabolism-Gerontology at Stanford's School of Medicine. Why Syndrome X? From Harold Himsworth to the insulin resistance syndrome.
Although the concept of Syndrome X was introduced in the Banting Medal address of 1988 (Reaven, 1988), the notion that led to its genesis had started approximately 50 years earlier. In this short history, an attempt will be made to trace the two paths of scientific discovery that were formally merged in New Orleans in 1988 to form the scientific foundation of Syndrome X. In addition, the develo...

متن کاملRole of Insulin Resistance in Human Disease
When trying to choose for Classic Overview a publication to honor adequately a contribution to nutrition/metabolism knowledge that will fittingly represent the work in question, one is frequently faced with a real dilemma. Not surprisingly, early papers often do little more than skim the surface of the subject and it may be years before the real breakthrough comes, or before an opportunity aris...
متن کاملGerald M. Reaven, MD: Demonstration of the central role of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Gerald M. Reaven, MD, could easily be epitomized as the “Father of Insulin Resistance.” (For those who do not know Dr. Reaven, he would humbly raise objection to being called Dr. Reaven rather than Jerry.) That said, Jerry is credited with developing the insulin suppression test, the first quantitative method to measure insulin-mediated glucose uptake in humans (1). Using this technique, he est...
متن کاملMetabolic syndrome: a work in progress, but a useful construct.
The metabolic syndrome is a construct that has come into common usage over the last few decades. In 1956, Jean Vague1 first demonstrated that upper-body obesity determined predisposition to diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, gout, and renal calculi; however, it was the presentation of this concept by Gerald Reaven in his Banting Lecture in 19882 that initiated the current focus on this entity ...
